Lactose synthase

Definition:

Lactose synthase is a mammary-gland enzyme complex of two proteins A and B. The B protein, alpha-lactalbumin, modifies the acceptor specificity of the galactosyltransferase so that, in the presence of alpha-lactalbumin, galactose from UDP-alpha-D-galactose is transferred onto D-glucose, releasing UDP and forming lactose. In the absence of alpha-lactalbumin the same A protein transfers galactose to N-acetylglucosamine (EC 2.4.1.90, N-acetyllactosamine synthase). It occurs in Bacteria and Eukaryota.
