Leukocyte elastase (neutrophil elastase) is a neutrophil azurophilic-granule serine protease in family S1 (formerly EC 3.4.21.11), differing from pancreatic elastase in synthetic-substrate specificity and inhibitor sensitivity; it hydrolyses proteins including elastin, preferentially cleaving Val over Ala bonds. By degrading elastin, pathogens and host tissues it drives innate immune defence and emphysema/inflammatory tissue damage. It is distributed across Eukaryota and Bacteria.
