Lignin peroxidase is a heme protein involved in oxidative lignin breakdown by white-rot basidiomycetes. H2O2 first oxidizes the heme iron to form compound I (FeIV=O radical cation); a subsequent one-electron reduction by an aromatic substrate generates compound II and a substrate radical that cleaves lignin model compounds such as 1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-(2-methoxyphenoxy)propane-1,3-diol into 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde, 2-methoxyphenol and glycolaldehyde.
