Limulus clotting enzyme (proclotting enzyme) is a horseshoe-crab serine protease in family S1 from haemocyte granules of Limulus and Tachypleus, activated by limulus clotting factor B; it selectively cleaves Arg18 and Arg47 bonds in coagulogen to form coagulin and fragments. By polymerising coagulogen it seals wounds and entraps bacteria. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
