Lycopaoctaene synthase is a diterpene-type carotenoid cyclase characterized from the green microalga Botryococcus braunii race L. It condenses two molecules of geranylgeranyl diphosphate via a prephytoene diphosphate intermediate, and with NADPH and H+ as co-substrates releases two molecules of diphosphate and NADP+ to form lycopaoctaene. In vitro it can accept (2E,6E)-farnesyl diphosphate and phytyl diphosphate and can even condense two different substrates into chimeric products, but these alternative substrates are not used in vivo. It participates in the biosynthesis of (14E,18E)-lycopadiene.
