Macrophomene synthase is a polyprenyl cyclase isolated from Macrophomina phaseolina, a pathogenic fungus causing damping-off, seedling blight, collar rot, stem rot, charcoal rot, basal stem rot and root rot on many plants. The 22-membered macrocycle in macrophomene is the largest terpene macrocycle discovered to date. It cyclizes all-trans-hexaprenyl diphosphate into macrophomene and diphosphate. Structurally it is a polyprenyl cyclase.
