Magnesium chelatase
Definition:
EC Tree > 6 Ligases > 6.6 Forming nitrogen-metal bonds > 6.6.1 Forming coordination complexes > 6.6.1.1 magnesium chelatase
Magnesium chelatase inserts Mg2+ into protoporphyrin IX to form Mg-protoporphyrin IX, the first committed step of chlorophyll biosynthesis and a branchpoint of the tetrapyrrole pathway: ATP plus protoporphyrin IX plus Mg2+ plus water yields ADP plus phosphate plus Mg-protoporphyrin IX plus 2 H+. It is found in Bacteria, Eukaryota and Archaea. Structurally it is a heterotrimeric AAA+ chelatase (ChlH/ChlI/ChlD).
