Malate-CoA ligase activates malate to malyl-CoA while producing ADP plus phosphate rather than AMP plus diphosphate: ATP plus malate plus CoA yields ADP plus phosphate plus malyl-CoA. It is found in Bacteria and Eukaryota. Structurally it is an ADP-forming acyl-CoA ligase.
