N-carbamoyl-L-amino-acid hydrolase is an amidohydrolase that, with EC 3.5.1.77, hydantoin racemase and hydantoinase, forms the hydantoinase process converting D,L-5-monosubstituted hydantoins into optically pure D- or L-amino acids. The Alcaligenes xylosoxidans enzyme is broad on carbamoyl-L-amino acids but inactive on carbamoyl derivatives of glutamate, aspartate, arginine, tyrosine and tryptophan; the Sinorhizobium meliloti enzyme requires a divalent cation. It hydrolyzes an N-carbamoyl-L-2-amino acid into an L-amino acid, ammonia and CO2. In industry it produces L-amino acids. It features an amidohydrolase fold.
