Mannitol dehydrogenase
Definition:
EC Tree > 1 Oxidoreductases > 1.1 Acting on the CH-OH group of donors > 1.1.1 With NAD+ or NADP+ as acceptor > 1.1.1.255 mannitol dehydrogenase
Mannitol dehydrogenase from Apium graveolens (celery) oxidizes alditols that have a minimum 2R chirality at the carbon adjacent to the primary carbon undergoing oxidation; it is specific for NAD+ and does not use NADP+. Using NAD+, it oxidizes D-mannitol to D-mannose, concomitantly reducing NAD+ to NADH and releasing H+. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
