Mannuronan 5-epimerase
Definition:
EC Tree > 5 Isomerases > 5.1 Racemases and epimerases > 5.1.3 Acting on carbohydrates and derivatives > 5.1.3.37 mannuronan 5-epimerase
Mannuronan 5-epimerase epimerizes C-5 of some β-D-mannuronate residues in mannuronan into α-L-guluronate, modifying the polymer into alginate. It is found in brown algae and alginate-producing bacteria of the Pseudomonas and Azotobacter genera. It converts [mannuronan]-β-D-mannuronate into [alginate]-α-L-guluronate. It is found in Bacteria and Eukaryota. Structurally it is an alginate mannuronan C5-epimerase.
