Mannuronan synthase is a polysaccharide polymerase that polymerizes beta-D-mannuronate residues from GDP-alpha-D-mannuronate into a (1->4)-beta-D-mannuronan chain, releasing GDP. The product is the intermediate mannuronan that is later epimerized to alginate. It is found in brown algae and in alginate-producing Pseudomonas and Azotobacter species. It occurs in Eukaryota and Bacteria.
