Mannuronate-specific alginate lyase is a polysaccharide lyase that degrades alginate by beta-elimination, cleaving the (1->4) bond between beta-D-mannuronate and either alpha-L-guluronate or beta-D-mannuronate, yielding oligosaccharides with 4-deoxy-alpha-L-erythro-hex-4-enuronosyl non-reducing ends and beta-D-mannuronate reducing ends. Depending on substrate composition it produces unsaturated oligosaccharides of various lengths. Structurally it is a PL7/PL18 mannuronate-specific alginate lyase.
