Gelatinase A is a secreted zinc metalloendopeptidase in peptidase family M10, but with an additional fibronectin-like domain. It cleaves gelatin type I and collagen types IV, V, VII and X, and cleaves the collagen-like sequence Pro-Gln-Gly-/-Ile-Ala-Gly-Gln. In connective tissue and at cell surfaces it remodels basement membranes and is activated by membrane-type MMPs. It features a catalytic zinc domain, a fibronectin-like insert and a hemopexin-like domain.
