Membrane dipeptidase is a membrane-bound, broad-specificity zinc enzyme abundant in kidney cortex, inhibited by bestatin and cilastatin, and the type example of peptidase family M19; it hydrolyses dipeptides. By digesting dipeptides at the renal brush border it participates in amino-acid reabsorption. It is distributed across Eukaryota, Bacteria and Archaea.
