Procollagen C-endopeptidase is a 100-kDa zinc metalloendopeptidase in peptidase family M12 (astacin family), activity enhanced by Ca2+ and an enhancer glycoprotein. It cleaves the C-terminal propeptide at Ala-/-Asp in type I and II procollagens and at Arg-/-Asp in type III. In connective tissue it trims the C-telopeptide after N-propeptide removal to permit collagen fibril assembly. It features an astacin-like catalytic domain regulated by the type II procollagen C-proteinase enhancer.
