Mitochondrial processing peptidase is a zinc metalloendopeptidase in peptidase family M16 (pitrilysin family), known from the mitochondrial matrix of fungi and mammals, formed from two homologous subunits encoded by the yeast MAS1 and MAS2 genes. It releases N-terminal targeting peptides from precursor proteins imported into mitochondria, typically with Arg at P2. In the mitochondrial matrix it removes presequences. It features an M16-family zinc catalytic chamber formed by two homologous subunits.
