Methionine synthase contains zinc and cobalamin and remethylates homocysteine to methionine using the methyl group of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, regenerating tetrahydrofolate; the Co(I) is occasionally oxidized to Co(II) during the cycle, and reductive reactivation uses SAM and a reducing system (NADPH and methionine synthase reductase in mammals).
