Methylcysteine synthase is a PLP-dependent cysteine lyase that replaces the beta-acetate side chain of O-acetylserine (or serine) with methyl mercaptan to give S-methylcysteine, participating in organosulfur metabolism. Structurally it is a PLP-dependent beta-replacement enzyme.
