Coccolysin is a 30-kDa zinc metalloendopeptidase found intracellularly in Streptococcus thermophilus and S. diacetilactis and in the medium of S. faecalis, in peptidase family M4, formerly in EC 3.4.24.4. It preferentially cleaves -/-Leu, -/-Phe, -/-Tyr and -/-Ala bonds. In lactic acid bacteria it digests intracellular milk proteins. It features a thermolysin-like zinc catalytic fold.
