Beta-Lytic metalloendopeptidase is a zinc metalloendopeptidase from Achromobacter lyticus and Lysobacter enzymogenes, the type example of peptidase family M23. It digests bacterial cell walls, cleaving N-acetylmuramoyl-/-Ala and the insulin B chain at Gly23-/-Phe > Val18-/-Cya. In the environmental bacteria it lyses competing Gram-positive bacteria. It features a zinc catalytic fold specialized for peptidoglycan cleavage.
