Myeloblastin (proteinase 3) is a neutrophil serine protease in family S1 from polymorphonuclear-leukocyte granules, not inhibited by secretory leukocyte proteinase inhibitor; it hydrolyses proteins including elastin by preferential cleavage of Ala over Val bonds. By degrading extracellular matrix and autoantigens it drives vasculitis and inflammatory tissue damage. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
