Myeloperoxidase

Definition:

EC Tree > 1 Oxidoreductases > 1.11 Acting on a peroxide as acceptor > 1.11.2 Peroxygenases > 1.11.2.2 myeloperoxidase
Myeloperoxidase is a calcium-containing heme protein (proximal ligand histidine) present in phagosomes of neutrophils and monocytes, where the hypochlorite it generates is strongly bactericidal. It differs from chloride peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.10) in preferentially forming hypochlorite rather than chlorinating organic substrates; it converts Cl-, H2O2 and H+ into hypochlorous acid and H2O.
