Myosin ATPase is the contractile apparatus of muscle and nonmuscle cells; each myosin molecule has two heavy chains (~200 kDa) and two pairs of light chains (15-27 kDa); the head region of the heavy chain contains actin- and ATP-binding sites. ATP hydrolysis powers actomyosin contraction, moving myosin one step along the actin filament. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms. Structurally it is an actin-based myosin motor.
