Magnolysin is a 58-kDa zinc metalloendopeptidase known from bovine pituitary neurosecretory granules and bovine and human corpus luteum, inhibited by EDTA. It hydrolyzes polypeptides with Arg or Lys at P1 and P2, e.g. pro-oxytocin at -Lys-Arg-/-Ala-Val-, and its specificity further depends on a beta-turn-alpha-helix of nine or more residues containing the paired basic residues near the center. In neurosecretory granules it processes pro-oxytocin and related neurophysins. It features an M16-family zinc catalytic chamber.
