Neoxanthin synthase opens the epoxide ring of violaxanthin to generate a chiral allene; neoxanthin is the precursor of the plant hormone abscisic acid and the last product of carotenoid synthesis in green plants. It converts violaxanthin into neoxanthin. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms. Structurally it is a carotenoid epoxide-opening synthase.
