Nepenthesin is an aspartic endopeptidase from the insectivorous plants Nepenthes spp. secretions and Drosera peltata leaves, with related enzymes in Lotus and sorghum. It belongs to peptidase family A1 (pepsin A family) and occurs in viruses and cellular organisms. Like pepsin it cleaves hydrophobic-amino-acid bonds, but additionally cleaves on either side of Asp and at Lys-/-Arg. In the pitcher fluid it digests captured insect prey to supply nitrogen. It features a pepsin-like aspartic-protease fold adapted to the acidic pitcher lumen.
