Stromelysin 1 is an extracellular zinc metalloendopeptidase of vertebrate tissues, homologous with interstitial collagenase and in peptidase family M10. It digests proteoglycan, fibronectin and collagen types III, IV, V and IX, and activates procollagenase, preferentially cleaving where P1', P2' and P3' are hydrophobic residues. In connective tissue it remodels the extracellular matrix. It features a catalytic zinc domain plus a hemopexin-like domain.
