Nitrile hydratase is a cobalt- or iron-containing metalloenzyme that hydrates short-chain aliphatic nitriles into the corresponding amides; it does not act on the amides themselves or on aromatic nitriles (cf. EC 3.5.5.1 nitrilase). It is widely used industrially to produce acrylamide from acrylonitrile. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms. Structurally it is an alpha beta heterodimeric Co/Fe-NHase.
