Nitrite dismutase is a ferriheme b nitrophorin that catalyzes the dismutation of three nitrite ions into two molecules of nitric oxide, nitrate and water. Found in the salivary gland of the blood-feeding bug Rhodnius prolixus, the released nitric oxide induces vasodilation in the bitten host; nitrophorins 2 and 4 also carry out this reaction.
