Nitrogenase (Mo-dependent) is a two-component Mg2+ enzyme: [4Fe-4S] dinitrogen reductase uses ATP to ferry electrons from ferredoxin to the MoFe protein, which reduces N2→2 NH3 via diazene/hydrazine, evolving 1 H2 per N2; also reduces acetylene→ethylene, azide, cyanide; does not reduce CO (cf. V-nitrogenase).
