Nocturnin is the circadian-regulated mitochondrial NAD(P)+/NAD(P)H phosphatase. It hydrolyzes NADP+ (or NADPH) with water, releasing NAD+ (or NADH) and phosphate, slightly preferring NADPH; the archaeal M. jannaschii enzyme is bifunctional as NAD+ kinase and NADP+ phosphatase. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
