Norspermine synthase

Definition:

EC Tree > 2 Transferases > 2.5 Transferring alkyl or aryl groups, other than methyl groups > 2.5.1 Transferring alkyl or aryl groups, other than methyl groups (only sub-subclass identified to date) > 2.5.1.126 norspermine synthase
Norspermine synthase is an aminopropyltransferase characterized from the thermophilic archaeon Pyrobaculum aerophilum. It transfers an aminopropyl group from S-adenosyl 3-(methylsulfanyl)propylamine onto norspermidine, releasing S-methyl-5'-thioadenosine and producing norspermine. It can also synthesize norspermidine from propane-1,3-diamine and thermospermine from spermidine, both with lower activity. The long-chain polyamines stabilize double-stranded DNA at high temperatures. Unlike EC 2.5.1.127, this enzyme does not accept norspermine as substrate.
