NsP2 protease is an alphavirus cysteine protease found in viruses and cellular organisms that processes the alphavirus nonstructural polyprotein nsP1234. The Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus enzyme prefers Gly or Ala at P1', Ala or Cys at P1 and Gly at P2. In the viral life cycle it liberates the nonstructural replication proteins. It features a papain-like cysteine-protease fold.
