Omptin is an outer-membrane aspartic protease encoded by the Escherichia coli ompT gene, in peptidase family A26. It prefers cleavage between consecutive basic residues but can also act when P1' is non-basic, showing an almost absolute requirement for Arg at P1 and a slightly less stringent preference for Arg at P1', which can also be Lys, Gly or Val. In enterobacteria it degrades host antimicrobial peptides and virulence proteins. It features a 10-stranded beta-barrel aspartic-protease fold.
