Oviductin (ovastacin) is a serine peptidase in family S1 that modifies the egg envelope during oviduct transit in the South African clawed frog Xenopus laevis, converting glycoprotein gp43 to gp41 (ZPC) at the pars recta and changing the envelope from unfertilisable to fertilisable; the active protease is thought to comprise an N-terminal protease domain coupled to two C-terminal CUB domains related to mammalian spermadhesins mediating sperm-envelope interactions, and the enzyme is also found in the Japanese toad Bufo japonicus; it preferentially cleaves at Gly-Ser-Arg373 of gp43 in the coelomic egg envelope to yield gp41. By modifying the egg envelope it enables fertilisation.
