Pectate lyase
Definition:
EC Tree > 4 Lyases > 4.2 Carbon-oxygen lyases > 4.2.2 Acting on polysaccharides > 4.2.2.2 pectate lyase
Pectate lyase is a polysaccharide lyase that favors the de-esterified anion (pectate) over the methyl ester (pectin, preferred by EC 4.2.2.10). It performs eliminative cleavage of (1->4)-alpha-D-galacturonan, yielding oligosaccharides with 4-deoxy-alpha-D-galact-4-enuronosyl non-reducing ends. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms and is a major plant-cell-wall-degrading enzyme in phytopathogens. Structurally it is a PL1/PL3 pectate lyase requiring Ca2+.
