Peptidase Do
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.21 Serine endopeptidases > 3.4.21.107 peptidase Do
Peptidase Do (DegP/HtrA) is a serine endopeptidase essential for clearance of denatured or aggregated proteins from the inner membrane and periplasmic space in Escherichia coli; natural substrates include colicin-A lysis protein, pilin subunits and MalS, it has weak activity on casein and other non-native substrates, acts as a chaperone at low temperature but switches to a peptidase (heat-shock protein) at higher temperature, and acts on at least partially unfolded substrates with P1 normally between a pair of hydrophobic residues such as Val-Val. By quality-control proteolysis it maintains envelope protein homeostasis.
