Peptidase K (proteinase K) is a fungal serine endopeptidase in family S8 from the mould Tritirachium album Limber, containing two disulfide bridges and one free Cys near active-site His (formerly EC 3.4.21.14); it hydrolyses keratin and other proteins with subtilisin-like specificity, and hydrolyses peptide amides. By digesting keratin and broad proteins it is widely used for nucleic-acid extraction. It is distributed across Eukaryota and Bacteria.
