Peroxidases are heme proteins with histidine as proximal ligand, the resting iron being Fe(III). They oxidize a variety of phenolic and non-phenolic donors such as 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and ABTS, and certain members (e.g. lactoperoxidase, soybean peroxidase) also oxidize bromide and iodide; overall 2 donor molecules plus H2O2 give 2 donor phenoxyl radicals and 2 H2O.
