Peroxiredoxins (Prxs) are a ubiquitous family of antioxidant antioxidant proteins divided into typical 2-Cys, atypical 2-Cys and 1-Cys classes. The peroxidase reaction centers on a redox-active peroxidatic cysteine that reduces a peroxide (ROOH) to an alcohol (ROH) and H2O, while the oxidized cysteine is reduced back by a thiol-containing electron donor such as thioredoxin, glutaredoxin or glutathione.
