Phenol phosphorylase
Definition:
EC Tree > 2 Transferases > 2.7 Transferring phosphorus-containing groups > 2.7.1 Phosphotransferases with an alcohol group as acceptor > 2.7.1.238 phenol phosphorylase
Phenol phosphorylase is the Thauera aromatica anaerobic phenol-degradation enzyme. Composed of three subunits, it transfers the beta-phosphoryl from ATP onto phenol, releasing AMP, phenyl phosphate and phosphate; during catalysis a diphosphoryl group is first transferred to a histidine in one subunit, phosphate is cleaved off to make the reaction unidirectional, and the remaining histidine phosphate is the actual phosphoryl donor. It initiates anaerobic phenol degradation. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
