Pheophorbidase is the plant chlorophyll-degradation demethylating enzyme. It hydrolyzes pheophorbide a with water, releasing C-132-carboxypyropheophorbide a and methanol, which spontaneously decarboxylates to pyropheophorbide a and CO2; type 1 is senescence-induced and type 2 constitutive, specific for pheophorbide a over b. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
