Pheophorbide a oxygenase

Definition:

EC Tree > 1 Oxidoreductases > 1.14 Acting on paired donors, with incorporation or reduction of molecular oxygen > 1.14.15 With reduced iron-sulfur protein as one donor, and incorporation of one atom of oxygen into the other donor > 1.14.15.17 pheophorbide a oxygenase
Pheophorbide a oxygenase is a Rieske-type iron-sulfur enzyme catalyzing the key ring-opening step of chlorophyll breakdown during leaf senescence and fruit ripening; it uses reduced ferredoxin (from photosystem I or the pentose-phosphate pathway), opens the chlorin ring to the red chlorophyll catabolite, which is immediately reduced by RCC reductase to the primary fluorescent catabolite. Pheophorbide b inhibits; 18O2 labeling shows only the aldehyde oxygen derives from O2.
