Phosphoketolase is a thiamine-diphosphate-dependent carbon-carbon lyase in the phosphoketolase pathway. It cleaves D-xylulose 5-phosphate together with inorganic phosphate into acetyl phosphate, D-glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate and water. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms and is a key enzyme of heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria, bifidobacteria and certain gut anaerobes, providing acetyl phosphate for acetate/ethanol synthesis. Structurally it is a TPP-dependent phosphoketolase.
