Phosphonoacetate hydrolase is a zinc-dependent C-P bond-cleaving enzyme of the alkaline-phosphatase superfamily that hydrolyses phosphonoacetate into acetate and phosphate. By mineralising the common environmental phosphonate pollutant phosphonoacetate it supports bacterial phosphorus scavenging under phosphate limitation and bioremediation of phosphonate-contaminated sites. It is distributed across Bacteria and Eukaryota and contains a binuclear-zinc alkaline-phosphatase-like active site.
