Phosphorylase kinase is the Ca2+/calmodulin-activated glycogenolytic Ser/Thr kinase. It requires Ca2+ and calmodulin and phosphorylates a specific serine on each subunit of dimeric phosphorylase b, releasing 2 ADP and tetrameric phosphorylase a (with further dimerization for muscle but not liver phosphorylase). The gamma subunit carries the catalytic domain. It couples muscle contraction to glycogenolysis-glycolysis. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
