Picornain 2A
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.22 Cysteine endopeptidases > 3.4.22.29 picornain 2A
Picornain 2A is a cysteine endopeptidase from entero-, rhino-, aphto- and cardioviruses, smaller than the homologous picornain 3C and also belonging to peptidase family C3. It selectively cleaves the Tyr-/-Gly bond in the picornavirus polyprotein at the P2-P1 junction between capsid and nonstructural regions, liberating the viral capsid protein. In the host cell it also shuts off host cap-dependent translation by cleaving eIF4G. It features a chymotrypsin-like fold with a cysteine catalytic nucleophile.
