Picornain 3C

Definition:

EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.22 Cysteine endopeptidases > 3.4.22.28 picornain 3C
Picornain 3C is a cysteine endopeptidase from entero-, rhino-, aphto- and cardioviruses, larger than the homologous picornain 2A, and the type example of peptidase family C3. It selectively cleaves the Gln-/-Gly bond in the poliovirus polyprotein; in other picornavirus reactions Glu may replace Gln and Ser or Thr may replace Gly. In the viral life cycle it processes the nonstructural and structural protein precursors to yield mature replication proteins. It features a chymotrypsin-like fold that uses a cysteine as catalytic nucleophile instead of serine.
