Plasmepsin I
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.23 Aspartic endopeptidases > 3.4.23.38 plasmepsin I
Plasmepsin I is a ~37-kDa aspartic endopeptidase from the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, belonging to peptidase family A1 and closest in structure to cathepsin D and renin; it is inhibited by pepstatin and was formerly in EC 3.4.23.6. It hydrolyzes the -Phe33-/-Leu- bond in the alpha-chain of hemoglobin, denaturing the molecule and priming it for further degradation. In the parasite food vacuole it initiates hemoglobin digestion. It features a pepsin-like aspartic-protease fold.
